Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder Clinic

The VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Spinal Cord Injury & Disorder (SCI/D) Clinics provide local and regional care for Veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders. The SCI/D system of care provides a full range of care for all enrolled Veterans who have sustained a spinal cord injury or have a stable neurological impairment of the spinal cord and provides care for Veterans with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Referrals are accepted from all NWIHCS providers as well as from our community hospitals and providers.

The focus of the team is to assist Veterans in being as fully functional and independent as possible in all of their roles while enjoying their life. Services include:

  • Comprehensive medical evaluation for spinal cord injury and disorders
  • Physical therapy evaluation for mobility and equipment needs
  • Social work assessment for overall function and referrals for community and VA programs
  • Care coordination and case management
  • Referrals to the SCI/D Center/Hub in Minneapolis for acute rehab care; acute Stage 3 or 4 wound care; annual preventive health evaluations; specialty surgical needs
  • Referrals to specialty SCI team neighbors: Speech therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition services, Wound care services
