OMAHA, Neb. — Dr. Marci Mylan has been named the new director for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (NWIHCS).

Dr. Mylan will serve as the senior official for the VA health care system that serves more than 161,000 Veterans who live in 104 counties in Nebraska, western Iowa, and portions of Kansas and Missouri.

Dr. Mylan currently serves as the associate director at the Minneapolis, Minn., VA Health Care System.

Dr. Mylan brings extensive clinical and administrative experience. She has served in a variety of supervisory roles in the VA mental health service line. Dr. Mylan also served as the acting deputy director for seven months in 2009 for the VA Midwest Health Care Network, Veterans Integrated Service Network, which is located in Minneapolis.

Dr. Mylan holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and a master’s degree in health care administration from the U.S. Army Baylor Program at Baylor University in Texas.

Her new appointment is effective Jan. 15, 2012. Dr. Mylan’s appointment will also coincide with a promotion to the VA’s senior executive service.

Dr. Mylan will provide strategic vision and leadership for the health care system that includes a tertiary medical center in Omaha and a community living center in Grand Island, Neb.  The system also includes community-based outpatient clinics in Lincoln, Grand Island, Holdrege, Bellevue, Norfolk, North Platte, Neb., and Shenandoah, Iowa., as well as a contract outreach clinic in O’Neill, Neb.

Dr. Mylan replaces Al Washko, who retired March 31 after serving as the VA NWIHCS director for more than seven years. Nancy Gregory, the system’s associate director, has been acting director in the interim.
