Two Grand Island VA Pharmacists Earn National Awards



OMAHA, Neb. — Two employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs Grand Island health care facility were recently awarded national-level awards.


Lourdes Heuermann, PharmD, was presented with the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations Excellence in Innovation Award. The award recognizes and honors a qualified pharmacist who has demonstrated significant innovation in his or her respective practice, method, or service directly or indirectly resulting in improved patient care and/or advancement of the profession of pharmacy.


The award, which is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, was given at the Nebraska Pharmacists Association Annual Convention in June.


Dr. Heuermann has been with the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System in Grand Island for 14 years.  She is currently the clinical pharmacist on the southwest team and is responsible for the medication therapy management of numerous disease stated. 


She also serves as residency preceptor and is clinical faculty with both the University of Nebraska and Creighton University Colleges of Pharmacy.  


Dr. Heuermann is a 1982 graduate of UNMC and is a board certified ambulatory care pharmacist.


Janelle Sellers, PharmD, was awarded the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award.  This national award is given annually to an outstanding young pharmacist. The young pharmacist receiving this award has been out of pharmacy school less than 10 years and has demonstrated his or her leadership in the profession.  The award is presented by Pharmacists Mutual Companies . 


Dr. Sellers was presented the award at the 2012 Nebraska Pharmacists Association Annual Convention in  Lincoln in June.


She is the Pharmacy Residency Program director and clinical pharmacy specialist in ambulatory care for the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System in Grand Island.  She is also adjunct assistant professor for the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy and serves as a pharmacy residency program practitioner  surveyor for the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists. 


She is a 2005 graduate of UNMC.
